Judgef* his charge to the Grand Jury, at reviewed the cases in the calendar, three in number. Su learned Judge informed the jury that measures were taken to provide some better accommodation before the bell of the Court. Jury returned true bills against Thomas King 1 rcenv and against William Freeman for extorting money romMr.Dobbs,of Kaiapoi. These being the only cases for the Grand Jury, they were dismissed. T arckny —Thomas King was indicted for stealing money H. Hinge on October last. The prisoner pleaded guilty, Tbeeged the merciful consideration of the Court, as he was when he committed the offence. TTs Honor remarked that intoxication could not be admitted an excuse for the offence committed by the prisoner: 03 eiallv in a country where, like this, an honest livelihood be obtained by all who chose to seek it. He sentenced the prisoner to twelve months hard labor, commencing from October 8. Extorting Money. — William Burton was placed at the bar ou this charge, to which he pleaded not guilty. A uettv J ur y was sworn > °f which Mr. Heath was chosen °Mr Duncan conducted the prosecution. The prisoner was undefended. The prisoner, in his defence, said he had no witnesses to call and as he was too poor to employ a solicitor, he hoped the' Court would deal leniently with him. The prisoner was found guilty. His Honor made some severe comments on the crime of which the jury had found the prisoner guilty; and expressed his determination to punish such offences with the utmost rigor and felt strongly disposed to order him to be publicly wnipiied. The sentence was, three years imprisonment with The Crown prosecutor said he should withdraw the second indictment against the prisoner. This being the whole of the criminal business, the Court adjourned till Friday.
