No Change In Maori Land Policy
(Special to the Beacon) “There has beep no change in the Government’s policy with regard to Maori land settlement,” said the Minister of Labour, Mr Sullivan, replying, in the House of Representatives, to a question from Opposition members, who asked whether the announcement from Auckland, that the Government had approved the purchase of a house in Newmarket for use as a Maori hostel to accommodate some 30 Maori youths, thereby facilitating their industrial training in Auckland, though in harmony with the policy of the previous Government, represented a departure from his Government’s avowed policy of “back to the land” for the Maori people. The. Government’s election policy laid it down that opportunities would be provided for Maori youths to enter industry, added the Minister. To that end, therefore, the Government proposed the establishment of hostels at Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington for the accommodation of Maori youths.
