Ohope Light Horse Club's Dance

The Captain’s Cabin at Ohope was filled with Whakatane and Ohope people on Thursday night for the Ohope Light Horse Club’s dance held under the auspices of the Ohope Progress League.

Dancing was interspersed with novelty items. There was a guessing competition with a prize for the guesser who was nearest in judging the measurement of the neck, chest, waist and calf of Mr Wells. There was a demonstration of the Tango by Mrs and Miss Coxitts. The St. Andrew’s Pipe Band played for the Gay Gordons and other tunes.

A mock auction of a rooster was conducted by Mr Rex Bartlett. Before the -supper waltz, Mr and Mrs Harrison and daughter were presented with a travelling clock and a compact on behalf of the combined societies of the beach.

Mr Parr, president of the Progress League, in making the presentation spoke of the good work done by Mr Harrison as postmistress and the service given by the family in assisting with their music at the beach dances.

Mr and Mrs Critchley were presented with a clock and were given good, wishes for future success in their new place of residence. On behalf of the St. Andrew’s Pipe Band, a travelling rug was given to Mr and Mrs Harrison with the hope that their trip to England would be a very happy and enjoyable one.

Mr Don Whiteman also was presented with a parcel with the good wishes of the beach.

After the supper, were a Scotch Reel by members of the Pipe Band and their partners, a wheelbarrow race and a competition to see who could carry a jockey in riding the length of the hall. The next dance will be sponsored by the Plunket Society.
