Waimana Institute Is Twenty-One

A festive occasion in the Waimana Hall was a social and dance. Sister institute members and'families were guests, several hundred being present Mrs Hewitt, the president, welcomed all. Mrs Hewitt also presented sprays to foundation members present and to Mrs McCallion, the Federation president. Birthday sprays were presented to Waimana members having birthdays in August. Visiting members presented boxes of flowers and sprays to Mrs Hewitt on behalf of their institutes; wishing Waimana a happy birthday and congratulating them on being twenty-one.

Items were presented between the dancds. The Glee Club opened the programme with two songs, Mrs Stansbury and Mrs Carpenter gave elocutionary items. There was a violin trio by Mrs S. Pearce and Yvonne and Graham Pearce and a piano and violin duet by the Pearce children. Members of the Drama Club presented two skethes, “Tem~ peraments” and “Dumb Bell."’ Mrs F. Mitchell, dressed as a sailor, sang “Leave it to the Navy” and ended with the “Sailor's Hornpipe” in a humorous vein. The dance music was played by King’s Orchestra, and Mrs R. Looney acted as M.C. Home-made supper was served, and the two-tiered birthday cake, made by Mrs Wylde and iced by Mrs Hewitt, took pride of place. During the ceremony of lighting the 21 candles, the*Glee Club sang “We f re 21 Today,” the words having been written by Mrs Hewitt. After supper dancing continued.
