DANGER OF FOG TO TRAVELLERS ON BAY ROADS

Fog is not unknown in the Bay of 'Plenty and motorists travelling on some of the district’s highways have often had to cut their speeds rifht down. There is an added danger in a fog and every traveller should exercise additional care. Here are a few hints recommended by the Automobile Association:— Switch on side lights and screenwipers, and the de-mister if you have one. Keep side windows clean in case a “lost” car approaches from an unexpected angle. > Close to Screen

* Keep about a yard .from the kerb, but look out with extra care for cyclists. Sit up close to the screen. Don’t park on the road, particularly at night. See that your fog lamp is correctly set and focussed. It should point to the kerb only a few yards ahead of the car, and no beams should be allowed to escape upwards to form “back-glare.” Use a reliable passenger to give you “distance off” in very bad conditions; carry a torch so that he can lead you across spacious, junctions. Be very cautious about overtaking, not only of oncoming hidden traffic, but also because you will be going out of sight of the guiding kerb. Don’t straddle the “cat’s-eyes.” Some other driver may be doing the same thing in the opposite direction.

Keep your speed down, but do not resent the sharper-eyed driver who finds that he can go faster than you. Assist him to overtake and then use his eyes by following him, but with the utmost circumspection.
