Churches And Sunday Entertainment: Application Declined
While the Ministers’ Association objected to the holding of a Sunday night picture show for charitable purposes, the Catholic priest, Father Curley, raised no objection, it was revealed at a Whakatane Borough Council meeting on Monday night. They had been asked for their opinions. Varied views were expressed by Councillors. The cause—for an old persons’ home —was a worthy one, said Crs R. T. Morpeth and H. G. Warren but the latter thought he must vote against the Sunday screening in view of the attitude of the Ministers’ Association. Cr A. O’Rourke said this might be the thin end of the wedge where Sunday entertainment was concerned.
He found it hard to make up his mind, said the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry.
The application of KerridgeOdeon for permission to hold the screening was declined.
