Unusual Effect Of Maori Melodies Played On Zither

Maori melodies give an unusual effect when played on the zither, producer Lee Hill of Television Films, New Zealand Ltd., says after experimenting with local exponents of the instrument. The latest of the firm’s world release short films on New Zealand, “Land of Hinemoa,” has reached the editing stage, and though it is not yet definite that the final sound track will carry zither background music, Mr Hill says the possibility has fascinated him. The theme melody for the film is Alfred Hill’s well known “Waiata Poi,” which is the theme for all the Maoriland Movielogues. “Land of Hinemoa” is all Maori however, and lends- itself to use of a variety of other numbers. The firm expects that “Taupo Holiday” will be seen by 100,000,000 people, as 35 m.m. prints have been sent to the U.S.A., Canada, and the United Kingdom, and 16 m.m. prints are being prepared for the world market. The New Zealand premiere of the second film, “Around Port Nicholson,” took place recently, and it will also shortly be printed in Sydney, for the world market.
