Important Survey Of New Zealand Sheep Now Being Made
A survey of the various types of sheep farming in New Zealand and a study of their economics has been begun by the New Zealand Meat and Wool Boards’ Economic Service, which was established last January, and is jointly controlled and financed 'by the two boards. Explaining this in its annual report, the New Zealand Wool Board says that a field officer of the service has been stationed in each island, at Dannevirke and at Christchurch and the material they collect is forwarded to the statistician at head office for classification and analysis. “It is realised,” says the Wool Board, “that the task before the service is essentially a long-term one, as the study of trends and movements in the industry must be made over a number of years before a true picture can be obtained to 1 cover the fluctuations in costs and production due to the vagaries of market conditions and climatic influences.
“Both boards feel, however, that it is work which must be under-' taken 'if they are to have a clear picture of the facts on the producing side of the industry and not merely unco-ordinated opinions on which to base policy aimed at improving the economic welfare of the sheep farmers of the Dominion.”
