Local Frontiersmen Hold Popular Old Time Evening
There was a very friendly gathering in the Awakeri Hall on Saturday night, when Y Squadron, Legion of Frontiersmen, Whakatane, held their first Ladies’ Night since the election of new officers. Sergeant Major F. Comer made a capable M.C. and as soon as he could persuade hungry guests to leave a little of the crayfish until supper time, began the evening’s entertainment.
Competitions, interspersed with toasts, items, dancing and community singing kept all 50 guests very gay and promoted an atmosphere of a real old-time party. The competitions were won by Mrs B. Boon, Mrs C. Coates, Mrs F. Comer, Miss A. Bathe and Capt. H. Mole. In the lamp lighting rush at 10.30, which- developed into a competition Liieut. C. T. Bathe “Handi” was first, Ken Judd on “Tilley” second, closely followed by Sgt W. P. Tyssen on “Aladin,” and Sgt Major F. Comer on “Tilley” brought up the rear. All entrants showed plenty o£ spirit (Methylated). Items by Mr G. Anderson and Sgt W. P. Tyssen during the evening were much appreciated and Mrs C. R. Coates and Ftm C. T. Plank ably assisted with music.
A sumptuous supper, served during the evening, was highlighted by the generous servings of crayfish and various cream filled cakes.
