SUGGESTIONS MADE FOR CLEANING UP BEHIND STRAND

Suggestions for the reclamation and cleaning up of the river bank behind the Strand by the sanitary inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, were considered by the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council and then referred to the Works Committee for action with the Whakatane Harbour Board, the body controlling the area. Mr Knights stated that as long as the area remained unclaimed it would be an eyesore. He suggested that the Council approach the Harbour Board with a view to having the area reclaimed. If sound retaining walls were constructed he thought part of it would be suitable for controlled tipping. The whole operation could be completed in small sections.

“With proper tipping I do not think a nuisance would be created,” he stated, “but the whole appearance of the river bank would be vastly improved.” Mr Knights said the cost would not be high and the reclamation could possibly be speeded up by the pumping of silt from the river

The deputy mayor, Mr C. S. Armstrong, said he thought the suggestion was a good one but the area was not the responsibility of the Council.

Cr H. G. Warren also pointed this out. The harbour board was the controlling authority. But something should be done as the place was an offensive area especially in the immer and autumn. Every year it was getting worse. Cr R. T. Morpeth said he thought the question should be left to the Works Committee to approach the harbour board to see if some improvement could not be made. At the same time e suggested that the board should be approached about the possibility of making more sections available for building. g
