Pony Club’s Long Week End Trek

Most ambitious ride yet attempted by Whakatane Pony Club members was undertaken over the weekend by the town branch, accompanied by one member from White Pine Bush and one from Hamilton. Setting out on Saturday morning in dubious weather that cleared later, the riders made camp in the Cheddar Valley about 14 miles from town after having lunch on the road. Mr J. Smith kindly permitted the use of portion of his property, gave the club the freedom of his orchard and h 6 and Mr Parker provided the camp with milk, which hospitality was greatly appreciated. On Sunday there was ourte a crowd of visitors to camp, from town and from the Wainui settlement, and the young riders demonstrated some of their school work. They also enjoyed horseback games and took their ponies for a swim. The camp was in charge of the District Commissioner, Mr D. Blomfield, assisted by the branch secretary, Mrs Lynds, instructor Mrs Chamberlain, and Mijss K. Blomfield. Young riders who attended were Ray Reid, Marlene Lynds, Bobby Abbott, Philip and Hugh Cooper, Val Brown, Susan and Judith Evington, Janet Holloway (Hamilton), Janet Morice, Fred Kalman (White Pine) and Robm Zinsli.
