Public Opinion

Though their views on all subjects are freely published here because we believe it our duty to uphold the public's right to freedom of opinion, our correspondents' opinions are not necessarily shared by this news, paper. HEADS BEACH CLEAN-UP Sir, —The Beautifying Society cailed a public working bee to clean up the b'each and make it nicer for the children to play on. Out of an estimated population of 4,000 in Whak. tane 16 men and one lady saw fit to attend and they did: a good job. Of those who turned up three men were fathers of young children and the balance either have grown up families or none at all, where, I ask, were the fathers of all the children who enjoy ths beach,? guess vhey must have been Very busy some place. The President of the Beautifying Society in thanking the ladies who provided the morning tea remarked that it seemed a pity that so many fathers of. young, children, were among the missing, but he hoped ■they would enjoy the effort of the few. * ■ Civic pride appears at a very low ebb in this town, even among the business people. Perhaps next year there will not be a call for such a working bee, the Borough Council may be able to handle the job. Yours etc.,
