Heavy Rain Mars Guy Fawkes Night
Dampened somewhat by heavy rain, which commenced/to fall early in the evening, Whakatane and parts of the surrounding district nevertheless celebrated the anniversary of Guy Fawkes on Saturday night with just as much gusto and enthusiasm as in former years. Fireworks of all descriptions and brightly coloured skyrockets lit the heavens for a considerable time after nightfall all over the Rangitaiki Plains. At Whakatane there were several bonfires, the main one feeing near the river in Lodge’s paddock. This attracted a huge crowd and produced a sparkling fireworks display. Over at Ohope the bonfire drew a large crowd and, supported by a fireworks display by the Air Training Corps, was one of the best seen in the district for a dumber of years. There were other bonfires at Thornton, Matata, Edgecumbe and Taneatua and each drew an enthusiastic and carefree crowd. *
