SUGGESTION MADE FOR CAMP SITE AT EIVERS BEACH
A suggestion that the Eivers Beach Domain at the lower end of McGarvey’s Road be developed into a camp ground in place of the Whakatane Domain was made by Cr R. T. Morpeth at Monday night’s meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. Plans for complete camping facilities were put forward but because of the uncertainty of any use of the ground it was decided to clear the area for a picnic ground for this summer, with the possibility of extending it to a camping ground next year.
Not Suitable? WTiiie he agreed that -the time had approached for a new camping ground apart from the Domain, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, did not think that Eivers Beach was a suitable alternative. There was going to be some expense attached to any camp there. The borough foreman engineer, Mr C. D. Molesworth, said he thought it would cost a considerable sum of money to establish a camp.
Cr Morpeth agreed but pointed out that the inspector would onlyneed, the minimum requirements for the first year. Mr Barry wanted to know if the land was worth the contemplated expenditure. Cr Morpeth: There are a large number of people living near the area now and if it is good enough for them it is good enough for a camp site. Cr R. Buttimore said that the time had now come when another camp-site was needed from the Domain. At least at Eivers Beach there were seagulls and water. Cr Morpeth said there was no other place in the borough for a camp site, he could think of. Cr H. G. Warren suggested that all the facilities from the Domain be shifted to Eivers Beach. The Domain could not be deprived of all the facilities at once, said Mr Barry.
Few Facilities The borough electrical engineer, Mr F. Lysaght, said there weren’t many facilities -at—the Domain to shift anyway. What was 'there could be moved in a day. Cr Buttimore suggested that the Eivers, Beach Domain be cleared for a picnic ground for the coming summer and if it was used by the public Some development work be done next year. Other councillors supported the suggestion and it was decided that the necessary work be done for this summer.
