Growing Church Membership In U.S.
Church membership is continuing to grow in the United States, The Christian Herald, a religious magazine, reports. Latest statistics show that at the end of 1948 there were 79,576,000 church members in the Nation, an increase of 2,100,000 during the year. The magazine notes that the increase “more than kept pace with United States population gains.” About 60 per cent of the total belong to 222 Protestant denominations. Over 90 per cent of all Protestants, however, are concentrated in the 31 leading denominations, each with more than 200,000 members. Roman Catholics account for 33 per cent of all, American church members, while 6 per cent are Jewish. About 1 per cent are divided among such groups as Russian and Greek Orthodox, Spiritualists, Buddhists, and others, the magazine says.
