Streets Paved With Gold

At least one important city has streets paved with gold. The city is Johannesburg, South Africa, and the discovery of the nature of some of its paving has caused a sensation there.

It came about through a decision of the City Council of Johannesburg to widen Claim Street. The widening necessitated removal of the gutters. These were made of stone from mine dumps. Johannesburg, gold-mining centre in the famous Witwatersrand, customarily l uses such material for highway improvements. The gutters were taken to a stonecrusher at Crown Mines to be broken for use, as aggregate in Crete. At this crusher it is routine to test all material for gold. The asay showed the gutter containing 10- pennyweight, or a half, ounce, of gold to the tort, almost three times as much per ton as the ore being mined near Johannesburg today.
