YOUNG FARMERS

AWAKERI CLUB MEETING Twenty-three members of the Awakeri Young Farmers’ Club were present at the monthly meeting on September 2. Proposals in regard to the Y.F.C. calf rearing competition were discussed and it was decided that the judges should regard the total number of calves raised by a member as his entry, to be judged en block, block. The club’s stock drive to aid the Y.F.C. National Memorial Fund was also discussed and it was decided to concentrate on bobby calves. Members were supplied with labels inscribed “Awakeri Y.F.C.” which were to be distributed amongst farmers for this purpose. Twelve members made application for Weedone to try its effect on pasture weeds. Tentative arrangements were made for a field day at the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company’s factory and the piggeries on Awaroa Soldiers’ Settlement.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the results of the club’s farm planning competition which was won by J. Barr with 111 points, R. Wallbank 107 points 2, C. Haultain 105 points 3 and C. Martin 102 points 4. Mr E. Haultain who judged this competition helpfully criticised each members’ entry. Last month’s field day was held on Mr A. Barr’s property at Awakeri where Mr Bob Barton gave an instructive lecture and demonstration on ploughing. Mr Barton dealt first with the care and maintenance of ploughs and tractors in general and then with the parts of ploughs and their adjustments in setting. Striking out, finishing and planning was capably dealt with, and Mr Barton was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by club members. The very successful dance which took place in the hall on August 30, provided a further £lB towards the Y.F.C. National Memorial Fund. Three new members have been enrolled.
