WOMENS INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was held in the Methodist Hall on February 4, Mrs Sutcliffe presiding over a fair attendance. The meeting opened with the Institute Song and Aspirations. Apologies were received and one new member enrolled. The business included nominations for president and committee, entries for the A. and P. Show, and preparatory arrangements for the Eisteddfod. Members were reminded of the Garden Party to be held on February 13 at Misses Ramson’s and each member was asked to bring a friend. After the Golden Thread, Women of China, read by Mi’s Teasdale, a debate ‘Cash buying is better than time payment’ took place, Mrs Attwood, Mrs Smith and Mrs Fennell for cash buying and Mrs K. Stewart, Mrs Sims,and Mrs Cairns for time payment. Both sides ably presented their case. Mr and Mrs Bigelow were the judges and afthr afternoon tea had been served Miss Bigelow gave a criticism of the debate and awarded 82 points to time payment and 80 to cash buying. The afternoon was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. Competitions were as follows: Best flower: Mrs Caisley 1, Mrs Stewart 2. Best tomato: Mrs Sutcliffe 1, Mrs Hannah 2. Crochet edging on handkerchief: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs Moran 2.
