A.T.C. REQUEST

TEMPORARY HEADQUARTERS

ADJOINING THE STRAND

The question of Brick Area again provoked Borough Council discussion las* Monday, wlien the Air Training Corps (Auckland') applied for the right to erect Air Force huts on the property owned by Mr F. B. Cutler adjoining the Strand. It was suggested that the buildings be two hutments 20 x 40 placed end 1 , to endl and thus constituting a fairly substantial hall which would act as a headquarters. The Deputy-Mayor: How long will they be there ? The Mayor: I don't know. I understand that the A.T.C. will be carried on after the war period. The period of their use is uncertain!. He' Would be prepared to waive the by-law for the duration but not longer. Cr Sullivan contended that once having given permission, it might be. very hard for the Council to get rid of the building in years to come. This would be a handicap after all' their efforts to unify the main street. I think it ought to have: a Drill Hall, said the Deputy-Mayor. We •should approach tile Government for something permanent for the training of our boys. I don't thmk we ought to allow these temporary structures to go up. Opotiki has a town barracks, why not Whakatane. Cr Sullivan: Yes—let as a furniture factory. Cr Creeke was definitely against the proposal, pointing out that the Council by consenting was letting the main street become a 'dump,' and it was impossible to tell when they would be removed. Why couldn't the A.T.C. go beyond the s Brick Area ? On the motion of Cr Sullivan it was decided to seek further particulars in view of the indefinite nature of the information, and to hold the matter over meanwhile.
