A STATE RESPONSIBILITY

A CHANCE remark by a councillor at the recent meeting of the Whakatane County Council, that the question of investigating the control of disease known as tuberculosis among' the Maoris was a State responsibility, has our wholehearted support. The item which was included, in the burden of inequitable and growing- hospital rate covered a percentage of costs in view of the large proportion of native population in the county. This minds is merely a method of cribbing the rate for a State purpose, the cost of which once having created the Government is unwilling to shoulder. Cr Spence is to be complimented on putting his finger on an obvious imposition which is completely outside the meaning and portent ot the hospital levy which confines itself to the maintenance and administration of the local hospital from which the rateable community is supposed to draw its benefits.
