Sir,—May I further opportunity since the S of the Zone 'K' Patriotic Committ'eey-Jto reintroduce the question of canvassing by Opotiki district collectors within the Waimana patriotic dis- - , trlct boundary. In spite of all that lias been stated in the Opotiki News to the contrary I can definitely say that tlie people canvassed were within our district as set out by the plan oi campaign. They arc part of the. Waimana community, have attended Waimana functions for years, hav© always shopped there and further several of the families who have - sons with the forces have; been officially farewelled at Waimana. My list shows that £37 15s was without a colour of right to doand in all fairness that sum should go to Waimana's credit. I sincerely trust that the hope expressed by the committee chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, that a refund will follow a fuller explanation. The collecting* of funds for the purpose we have in i mind is scarcely a subject .over which there should be any reason for friction and I trust that a friendly comparison of ideas will lead tci the decent thing being done. Yours etc., MARY WYLDE, Sec. Waimana Patriotic Committee. APPEAL CASES Sir, —I desire to express a few facts conccrning appeals lodged by the Whakatanc Paper Mills' on behalf of its employees. Fully 80 to 90 per cent of any work may, be undertaken by youths or men over military age, and yet ,we hear of appeals being allowed for men whose work consists of packing, rolling logs etc. Recently a case of a man being in the one position for two years proceeded to camp. His job was taken over by a new hand with but three months service who was drawn in a late ballot appealed for and allowed. The mill seems to be able to carry on just the same without the men whose appeals have been dismissed. Yours etc., ALL OR NONE.
