BOROUGH PRECAUTIONS

ANNOUNCED

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUBLIC

Furthering the pfeparatiom for an emergency the Controller of J the Borough Emergency Precautions Scheme organisation has issued circulars containing the following information and instructibns to be followed by the residents of the town. E.P'.S. Headquarters, Whakatane infant School. 1. Don't Panic. Traffic outlets of the Borough will b<; picketed to prevent panic evacuation. 2. Obej r official instructions: only find do not be misled by rumour. 3. Ejnergency Alarm. Fire siren, rising (10 seconds) and falling (5 seconds) for 2 minutes. Get into open—proceed to shelter (Sec No. f). All Clear Signal. Fire siren— Continuous blast of 2 minutes duration. Resume normal duties as Speedily as possible. If electricity is oil the alarm and all clear will lie given by the ring' ing of church bells and a similar provision in the business area.

4. Shelters. No public shelters are being constructed meantime. Get into open, take cover and lie flat. If time permits seek places of greater safety as follows:—(a) Business area—cutting on Hillcrest lload at top .of concrete steps. (b) Other areas—depressions and valleys in hills, preferably Maraetotara Gorge which affords excellent unlimited shelter. Take cover in growth and lie flat. "5. Dressing Stations. Walking casualties to proceed to dressing stations located at Public Hospital and temporary hospital (Higli School Goulstone Road) . 6. In cases of casualty or fires, or if you need urgent help—phone or send messenger to E.P.S. Headquarters (Infant School) or report to Block Wardens (see notes rc wardens). 7. Fire. Keep handy at all times a length of garden hose* and buckets; bucket of sand or earth, shovel and rake for incendiary bombs. Keep washtubs full of water. 8. Keep clear of damaged areas. 9.
