ADDRESS TO SCOUTS

DOMINION COMMISSIONER'S VISIT

TROOPS ROUSING RECEPTION

Boy Scouts and Wolf Cubs combined with their parents in extending a warm and cordial welcome to Dominion Commissioner Hector Christie, on the occasion of his visit to Whakatane last Thursday evening. The gathering took place in the Parish Hall and the boys under Scoutmaster Thomas and Cubmisttress Miss Blythe lost no time in making their visitor at home.

Accompanying the Chief were Commissioner F. N. Christian, and Secretary W. Ward Allen both of Tauranga.

In a splendid address to the boys, Mr Christie said that the world was looking to them help build the 'new order' which would follow the war. Their traini'ng as scouts would stand them in good stead in the tasks which lay ahead of them and he trusted that one and all they would live up to the principles they had been taught. He appealed to parents to encourage more and more boys to join the movement and said that it was the hope of the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall, to enroll every eligible boy in New Zealand. From a character-building process there was nothing better for a growing boy, for scouting taught useful and helpful accomplishments which made the finished young man adaptable to any circumstances in which he found himself placed. The great emphasis was not laid on the physical development of the boys, but rather on the moral and spiritual development. . The founder wanted boys to be strong 'morally' and it was to this end that the movement was now bending its greatest efforts. The evening passed in the playing of a number of scout gan>es and, cub dances or pastimes. It was pleasing to note a representative group from the executive of the recently formed Girl Guide troop.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Commissioner for his informative talk, after which supper was served by members of the ladies committee under the capable control of Mrs J. IX Rivett.
