Accident With Axe. Last week a nine year old boy of Waiohou, Mark Iki, was admitted, to the local hospital with injuries to a hand. He had been struck with an axe and bones and tendons in the middle and ring fingers were severed. Rotorua State Forests. The area of permanent State forest in the Rotorua conservancy is given by proclamation in the Gazette as 18,404 acres. The proclamation transfers several areas from the classification of provisional State forests to permanent and defines the boundaries some of which were wrongly proclaimed two years ago. Signs of Good Season.'. Said a well known dairyman to a BEACON representative last Saturday-: "This broken spring weather always guarantees a mild and productive season. I reckon that all going well, we should put up fresh records on-the Rangitaiki this year ,in spite of the change-over to cheese and all the other difficulties with which the farmer is contending." Pipe Band at Opotiki. The Whakatane Caledonian Society's Pipe Band took a prominent part in the Patriotic Gala Day at Woodlands, Opotiki, last Saturday, when substantial funds were raised for the local organisation. As usual the pipers came in for a splendid hearing from the general public and many of the bandsmen also attended the dance which was held in the evening. Patrifotic Comforts. A third instalment of knitted com* forts for the special knitting appeal has been forwarded to the National Patriotic Fund Board from the Opo-= tiki Women's Patriotic sub-commit-tee. The total number of articles now despatched to Wellington for this appeal is as follows: 123 scarvesi, 117 balaclavas, 81 pairs of mittens. f Cfpotiki'fe quota for the appeal is 180 of each article and a most urgent appeal has been made for 20 scarves to go forward overseas with the big appeal now nearing completion.
