First Aid Class. The First Aid class for members of the W.WjS.A. is to be take place on Tuesday next and not Thursday as announced in our last issue. Red Cross Campaign. -The committees supporting the candidates in the Red Cross Society's campaign for funds: have a number of functions arranged for the next fe days as concluding efforts prior to the close of the campaign on Wednesday next. Labour Candidate. Mr F. Haar, secretary of the Tauranga Labour Representation Committee announces that Mr Dudley A. Hill, farmer, of Kerepeehi, has been selected as the official Labour Party candidate to contest the Tauranga seat at the forthcoming general election. Mir Hill lias been associated with the Labour movement for many years and was appointed Government representative on the South Auckland Land Board in 1.936.
Auctione Sate To-morrow. At 1.30 p.m. to-morrow at the residence of Mr L. H. Brawn, Commerce Street, Messrs A. and Co will auction household furniture in quality and quantity that should attract many buyers. Precisely ! Emerging from a hotel in Whakatane yesterday two Maoris made their way along the Strand. One was, gestulating violently, and loudly speaking in his native tongue. He turned to his companion and vigously rattled off a string of Maori. With concentrated stare the other carefully proceeded along the path and replied: "Precisely!" Milshap to Launch. One of Whakatane's pleasure craft, the launch "Winnie H" owned by Mr A .Hayter, suffered a mishap and was submerged near a groin in i the river this week. The launch had I been undergoing an overhaul and J was left tied up at the groin in midstream. Probably the ropes caught to hold the vessel on its side as the tide rose with the* result that once started the water rapidly entered the cabin. Superficial damage only resulted.
Whakaitane County Affairs. The monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council is to be held on Tuesday next. Whakatane Golf Club. On Saturday a four-ball stableford bogey match will be played and fours will be arranged as players arrive at the clubhouse. Cattle from Gisborne. Another large mob —500 head —of young station-bred beef cattle from the Gisborne district passed through the Whakatane County by easy stages during the past week en route to the Waikato. Cattle on the move are now finding a good deal of feed on the roadsides as a result of the spring growth of grass-. Health Stamp Campaign. This year's health stamp campaign will commence on October 4 when stamps will: be available at all New Zealand post offices. Ihe stamps will be the same as last year's, but will have "1941" overprinted on them. Penny stamps will be l%d, the half-penny going towards the fund, and two-penny stamps will be three-pence, of which a penny will be devoted to the same purpose. Southern Lights Visible. Spectators at this morning's fire when returning to their homes might easily have thought another blaze was ensuing somewhere on the Plains, as the sky was to the southward alight with a magnificent glow. However, as the spectacle fluctuated and changed into many hues it was recognised as the Aurora Australis and several residents were to be seen admiring the beauty of this phenomenon of the Southern Hemisphere. Women Love Drill. "Women seem to love drill, and they like nothing better than to be put on the square and drilled by a really savage siergeant major," 'said General Sir Guy Williams, military adviser to the New Zealand Government, when speaking at a New Zealand Club luncheon in Wellington about women's war services in Britain. Women, he explained, were now being called up in age groups. They came before special committees, which had the power to send them back to their ordinary work if that was considered more useful. Otherwise the committee discussed with them their capabilities and experience, and worked out the sort of job for which they-were best suited. A lot depended on the uniforms. That of the womens' fire service ; which was of dark blue, with a thin red line, was the most popular.
