Whakatane Public Library.

At the monthly] meeting of the Public Library Committee the following books were selected: The Time is Now, Pierre Van Paassen; The Amazing Summer, P. Gibbs; Middle East, H. V. Morton; England's Hour, V. Brittain; How Green Was My Valley, R. Llewellyn; Murder at Grassmere Abbey, M. B. Dix; The Dream Prevails, M. Diver; Conspirators at Large, S. Maddock; Peter Thornliill R.A.F., E. Morrison.

Dogs Registered;

To date this year the Borough lilspector has registered 150 dogs owned by residents of Wliakatane.

Red Cross Event.

The committee supporting Mrs J. Crapp in the Red Cross Campaign has decided to hold a Children's Plain and Fancy Dress party Saturday, September 13, probably between the hours of 2 and 5.30 (j.m. Adults will be charged i/ttnd a large variety of tasty eatables will be provided. A prize will be given for the best hat worn by a ;hild. This event will be held in the Winter Show Buildings.

Water Works. At Monday's meeting of the Borough Council the electrical engineer (Mr F. W. Lysaght) reported that the new pvimp for the water plant will not be shipped from England for a further four weeks.

Rainfall Figures,

Mr H. Muscutt's rain guage on Wednesday morning registered .46 inches, while during Wednesday and until yesterday morning a further .75 points were recorded to bring the total for the. month 4.71 inches and the total for the year to date to 35.80.

Sudden Shower.

At about 1 p.m. yesterday a sudden shower of quite heavy rain fell at the Kopeopeo residential area yet those people in town experienced bright sunshine. Cars returning to business at 1 p.m, coming into (fry streets were noticed lo be sufficiently wet to indicate the heaviness of

the shower.

Need for Footpath.

At Monday's meeting of the Borough Council Cr C. S. Armstrong drew the attention of members to the need for a footpath in Anzac Avenue. The Mayor replied that it was the intention of the foreman--engineer to form a path in that street in readiness for constructing ft permanent path. lit was not the policy of the council to make teni r porary paths.

Red Cross Thanks,

Mrs Ernest Armstrong, organise? of the Red Cross concert, wishes to extend thanks to all -who assisted in any way towards the success of f he event, especially Mrs K. Armstrong, who played all accompaniments for the children's items and .ballets, Miss Walton, who trained tfhe children for dancing and who loaned curtains for the stage, and Mrs Littlejohn who trained the children for Ihe review.

Power Conservation,

Members of the Borough Council made a valiant effort to conform with the request to conserve electric power at the meeting on Monday last and electric radiators presented only a cold front to the council chambers. However, in the latter stage of the meeting one of the older members who was suffering from a touch of 'flu could not stand the strain and rose to switch on the

heaters,

Need 1 for By-law.

I For many years there lias been a by-law in force in the Borough, but until lately it has seldom, if ever, been thought of or observed in many cases. However, with a recent addition to the local Police Force some shopkeepers will have to alter things. The law is that which stipulates that signs. over footpaths must be 8 feet f rom the path and many are not. some being even under seven feet. As one businessman of long standing finds his is too low—discoverer) sfter 18 years In the same premises —and when the man in blue proceeds past the shop he must bend his head to pass beneath. Over six feet seven inches and with his helmet added Constable Thomassen's height has found out many breaches of this council requirement.
