LOCAL ABATTOIRS
COUNTY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION DEFINITION OF DISTRICT When discussing the Borough Council's decision- to build abattoirs at Whakatane, the Wha j katane County Council at yesterday's meeting decided to have ai conference with the Borough) Council, as requested:, with a view to the choice of a site andl the definition of boundaries. The councillors considered these matters of vital importance. The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, explained that all beasts slaughtered for public consumption within the boundaries fixed would have go through the abattoirs. Stock paddocks would be provided s=o that butchers in country areas wou-kl be able to have their Ripply at hand. He understood that 30 acres Jand was mentioned for and that the conn sulered site was near Poroporo. Following the suggestion that jnore distant centres such as Waimana and Matata could be left but of the area if thought advisable, this coming from Cr T. G. H. Cawte, Cr W. A. McCracken stated that careful investigation of the boundaries would be necessary, and effect on aDI centres such as Tane.utua and Edgecumbe would be •*> vital question. He added that the abattoir .system might or might not increase costs and the council would need I" exercise care. In the case of Edgecumbe meat was already transported from Whakatane to that town. In reply to a question the Clerk stated that the council was in no way involved financially and that the abattoirs would pay their way "without loss or profit. Cr H.,G. McCready advised members that the Taneatua butcher considered the move a good one Avhich would be convenient and would not increase meat priccsi. The chairman said that further ■discussion would result following the conference with the Borough Council-
