LOCAL SOLDIER'S LETTER ATTACKS BY BOMBS A lively description of the German dive bombers onslaught on Greece is given in a letter received from PriA r ate D. C. Morpeth, Avlio even when Avriting had to drop his pen to rush to the siren and S)ound a warning. He states the damage done as being indescribable, but at the same time adds, "Don't worry about us over here, it is nothing to what they are getting in England." PriA T ate Morpeth's letter is: Avritten about ten days! after the Ger-. mans marchedt into Greece and the damage caused by bombers was then very widespread and refugees; Avere searching for safety. He states that the German pilots arc game and fly extremely low to drop their bombs. AAiiile Avitii the anti-aircraft guns sotting up a barrage and the bombs falling make a terrific uproar. The defending searchlights scon picked up thi raiders and he had already been thrilled to see two falfing. At the time of Avriting bombers! Avere OA r er night and day and the men Avere lucky if they had tAvo hours sleep each night. Private Morpatli tells of a bomb striking shipping and lioav a part of one vessel struck a house 440 yards aAvay, and again of how a ship containing Turkish money was hit and notes Avere scattered for miles around. "Yesterday afternoon about twenty big bombers camo over and were flying low. From where Ave Avere Ave coulid see the bombs dropping aAvay from the planes. Two ' dropped ve>ry close to a boat not far off. For three nights this Aveclc I lurve been up all night," he states adding that others in different districts are certain to be: having a rougher time.
Farewell Dances. Troops on lea A re in the Whakatane district are being the guests at a number of functions both - public and private this Aveek. On Monday Edgecumbe bade farewell to its boys, Avhile on Tuesday Thornton honoured men on lcaA r e„ To-night a function is being held for members of the services at the Wintetr Show Building and also in the Te Teko Hall,, while to-morrow Awakeri Hall will be used for a similar purpose. A dance is to be held at Waimana also to-morroAV night Avhen the local Caledonian Society is to hold a goodAvill Ingletside in that district.
