Shooting in Opotiki. Good bags have been reported from various parts of the Opotiki district since the shooting season opened, game being fairly plentiful. Less Buttermaking, No collection of cream was made by the Rangitaiki Dairy Company yesterday and from now on collections will be. made only on every other day. While this position lasts only the buttermaking staff will be at work on the off days. The change from the daily collcction is somewhat earlier this season than in other years owing probably to the colder and dryer conditions. Theatre Arrangements. The manager of the local theatres, Mr S. Little, advises that it has. been decided that until further notice the Grand Theatre will screen only three sessions per week, on Friday and Saturday evenings with a matinee on Saturday. The Friday evening programme will commence at 8 p.m., the matinee on Saturday at 1.30 p.m., while during the winter months the Saturday night screening will commence at 7.30 p.m. From June 3 and continuing for the winter months the starting time of programmes at the Regent Theatre' will be 7.30 p.m. with the exception of late shopping night when the curtain will rise at the usual hour of 8 p.m. The usual Wednesday, Friday and Saturday matinees will continue at the Regent.

Road Improvements'. The. new cutting at the Waiotahi Bluff on the Whakatane-Opotiki main highway has been opened for traffic, although as yet the surface is somewhat rough. Dance at Awakeri. The Western Drain Football Club will herald the approach of the opening of Rugby fixtures with a dance to be held in the Awakeri Hall. The Farewell Committee is to share in the financial benefit of the dance. Farewell to Troops. The Women's War Service Auxiliary and the Home Guard has organised a dance to be held in the Winter Show Buildings on Wednesday evening, at which members of the fighting forces noAv on leave will be entertained. A similar function is, to be held at Thornton to-morrow night. Mr H. C. McCready's Meeting. Ratepayers at Ohope are reminded of Mr H. C. McCready's meeting to-night in the Captain's Cabin Hall. In a ring to tho Beacon Office last Monday Mr McCrcady said he desired to extend a special invitation to the opposition candidate. Red Cross Shop. The Red Cross shop will be stocked and run by the ladies of the, Awakeri Sub-Centre on Friday, May lfi. A full variety of useful household necessities will be on hand including home-made cakes, ment, vegetables, fruit ami farm produce. A request is made for local patronage.

Rugby Union. The opening of the Rugby Union season in the Whakatane district is scheduled for Saturday, May 21. The first Saturday's fixtures arc yet to be. arranged. The season was opened in the Opotiki Union on Saturday . Fall from Horse. Falling from his liorse on to the bitumen surface on the road in Commerce Street last week Mr John Fctherston received injuries which necessitated his admission, to the local hospital. He received shock, abrasions to the face, and contusions to the right arm. His condition is satisfactory. Impressment of Rifles. Those people in the Whakatane district who have in their possession a rifle or rifles are reminded thaf these must be handed into the local Police Station before Mia.y 15. The fact that the circular issued' did no? make this request absolutely cleai has been responsible for the response being very sloav, and also ha> left what some selfish people con sider a loophole to hold their rifle? so that they may continue to enjoy shooting for sport. The only own* ers exempt from the Government's order are those who are active memJbers of the Home Guard and those must make application to the autlv orities if they wish to retain their firearms.
