HOME GUARD ORGANISATION
THE fact that Whakatane can stage a parade of no less than twelve hundred members of the Home Guard, indicates the splendid manner in which the district organisation has been carried out by the local headquarters. Praise from the inspecting officer (Major Herrold) was more or less automatic, and probably carried the same remarks which have been made at all Home Guard demonstrations good bad or indifferent. However, and though we have no intention of meaning the foregoing remarks in an unkind manner, we feel that this district in spite of its pre-war reputation for extreme political leanings, has more than turned up trumps. With a total strength of fifteen hundred in the Home -Guarcl, there can be very few remaining ablebodied men absent from the ranks. We can honestly feel that as far as it is possible to go, we have gone. Now it is for the Government to- act by way of serious training in arms and financial assistance.
