SHOPKEEPERS PROSECUTED "VERY OLD LAW" . Three people, two shop OAvners i and! one employee figured in cases at the local Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with selling good:; on Sunday, and. in each instance fines AA r ere imposed. • Offence in King Street. The first charge concerned David Henry Beale and Ann Cato, Constable Urquhart statfingi in eA'idencc that he had visiitedi .thei shop owned by Mr Beale in King Street om a recent Sunday and found Mrs: Cato j selling groceries etcu Mr Beale had on being interviewed! admitted, that he employed Mrs Cato to sell goods for lii.ni at such time;. Both defendant's Avere fined 10s Avith costs 10s. "A Very Old Law.'" The other case concern ad! Gilbert Ernest Mahy, of Qlioipc, a plea of guilty being entered by Mr G, Otley. Sergeant Farrell stated! that a constable had. visited thei store on a Sunday to find a big trade' in progress, and stated that tlie storekeeper had continued to serve customers eA r en though the constable Avas present. Mr Otley explained to the Bench that the store served mostly campers and visitors of Avhich a large number visited the Ohope Beach. These visitors purchased from meal to meal and the shop Avas open as a convenience to them. It Avas iioAvever admitted that there, had. been a breach of the IaAV. "A A-ary old law too," stated the Magistrate as he inflicted a penalty of 10s wit.li costs. He 1 add.ed that the people making! purchases; should also be prosecuted for abetting the offence.
