THOSE SWIMMING BATHS!

Sir, —As a newcomer to Whakatanc I am pleased to see that there is talk ofvlocal swimming It seems amazing that the town councillors of this borough have not seen fit to provide the public with swimming baths. No doubt the local citv fathers thought their electors were well catered for with a river nearby and an ocean a lot further away, not to mention the old bath tub. However, other boroughs in the Auckland 'Province seems to think that ' v lsaths are a good why not Whakatane too! For instance, at Hamilton there is the Waikato River, big

However, other boroughs in the Auckland 'Province seems to think that ' v lsaths are a good why not Whakatane too! For instance, at Hamilton there is the Waikato River, big enough for all the citizens to swim (or get drowned) in, but the town has a swimming bath and lots of swimming carnivals and first rate swimmers. Paeroa, Cambridge and Morrinsvllle have rivers handy, but the town councils have provided swimming baths handy to the centre of their town where all the school children learn to swim. Have any of your local councillors read of Peter Hanan, outstanding NeAV Zealand swimmer of recent years ? He learned to swim in the Morrinsville baths and when he went to the city he become a champion. Such opportunities are denied the young people of Whakatane, where there are no swimming carnivals. What a pity! NEWCOMER.
