Furnishings for Home Guard. At a meeting of the No. 2A Area Home Guard committee, comprising delegates from the Rotorua Borough Council, Rotorua County Council, Tauranga Borough Council, Tauranga County Council, Whakatane Borough Council, Wliakatane County Council, Opotiki Borough Council, Opotiki Qeunty Council, Te Puke Borough Council, and T'aupo Road Board, it was decided that finance should be made available for proper furnishings of the area headquarters at Rotorua. II was also decided that sufficient money should be supplied for reasonable expenses incurred by officers ©f the Home Guard while on Home Guard business, based on estimates prepared up to March 31, 1941. Clansman Berths. The Northern S.S, Co's Clansman berthed at Whakatane at 1.30 yesterday to discharge 200 tons of general cargo. The vessel is expected to depart at approximately 4 p.m. to-morrow. Toll Service Interrupted. The main telephone line from Whakatane was out ©f order from about 7.30 p.m. last evening until this morning, a pole between Whakatane and Tanealua being knocked over by a motor car. The driver of the car involved Mr B. Quill,, was slightly injured. The damage to the toll service was repaired this morning.
Province Anniversaries. The anniversary of the foundation of three provinces in New Zealand will be celebrated this month. Wellington was first proclaimed a province on January 22, 1840. On January 27, Tarunaki province will be 10U years old, and on January 29 Auckland will celebrate its ninetyeighth birthday. Power Reduction. Together with tlie rest of the Auckland Province Whakalane was cn a 10 per cent reduction of electric power from about 6 p.m. on Monday until 10 p.m. on Tuesday night. This was due to a breakdown occurring at the livans Bay Power Station at Wellington and the supply from the Auckland province being called upon to subsidise. The Home Gunrd. The last of the three instruction classes held during the week for platoon and company commanders ol' the Home Guard was held last night, and now these leaders are equipped with a month's syllabus to take back to their respective com- : panics. The enthusiasm shown was gratifying, sixty men attending the special classes and showing keen interest. Enrolments to the Guard "still continue and it is anticipated that before long the number will have increased to near tlie 900 mark. Home Guard Enlistments Climb. The number of volunteers in the • Home Guard for the 2A Area with headquarters at Rotorua,, is still climbing steadily, the total now being well over 2000 men between Rotorua, Tauranga, Gpotiki and T'aupo. Rotorua still heads the list of local districts with 863 men, closely followed by Whakatane with 819. Tauranga district is next Avith 509, while Opotiki has 179 recruits, a total of 2370 men for the area. It was stated that sufficient rifles for training purposes are expccted to arrive in Rotorua at any .time. The Soldier's View. "The Government at home gets many a curse from the lads over here. We are still getting the local newspapers about two months old. and the wharfies and miners' strikes make a chap sick/* states a Dunedin soldier on active service in the Middle East in a letter to his parents. "Let me tell you also that the 'Aussies' are getting their own beer, cigarettes, tobacco, etc.„ in tlieir can teen, but we are told that our Government will not do the same for us. It would make a great difference, having to pay seven piastres for n tin of our own tobacco instead of 12 to 13 piastres for English stuff."
