QUARTERLY 'RUBBISH' COLLECTION
DO the people of WTiakatane really imagine that the Borough Council by its institution, of a quarterly junk collection is grappling with the real evil of eliminating* rubbish. The actual desire of the townspeople is: that the menace of decaying rubbish and food remains which become a danger to health should be removed. This has scarcely been met by the mere institution of a cart to pick up tins, boxes broken crockery and papers once every three months. The real evil has been side-stepped and, under the illusion of doing something to meet the: position the Council has introduced a junk-removal on the lay-by system. The average householder can fill the average rubbish tin at least once a week, yet of all this accumulated waste matter, he. must sort out only the imperishable objects and bury the rest. He is not allowed to keep fowls on a quarter-acre section (Government houses) and is forced, to foul, his property by digging continuous rubbish holes. Whaka, tane is surely deserving of a b.etter service than this, and we again express the urgent hope that the present arrangement will be.enlarged upon so that our town will eventually be; brought into line with others of its size.
