NOT CONCLUSIVE

THE HOME GUARD SCHEME! BEATING ABOUT THE BUSH It will be remembered that some weeks ago the associateMinister of National Service, the Hon. D. Wilson, visited Whakatane to address a meeting on the Home Guard scheme. That meeting, convened at Mr Wilson's request by His "Worship the Mayor, Mr 13. S. Barry, comprised local body and R.S.A). representatives from Whakatane and Opotiki and though the Minister asked the meeting to form a composite committee it was considered by those present that more elasticity and efficiency would result if the two districts worked independently.

At a later meeting, heW in Paeroa, it was decided, without prior reference to those bodies and districts interested, that the Bay of Plenty should form a section in itself and the Mayor of Tauranga was appointed to convene a meeting. The text of the resolution and an invitation to attend the meeting at Tauranga to-day has been received by Mr Barry. A logical question is: If the combination of the Whakatane and Opotiki counties and boroughs Avas considered too cumbersome, will not the Bay of Plenty prove more so? It appears that indecision marks the progress of the assor tour and the latest development will not increase confidence in the Government's vague scheme.
