ENJOYED A PICNIC
THE N. ZEDDERS IN EGYPT WHAKATANE SOLDIER'S LETTER In a letter to his mother, Mrs J. Kinnaird, of Salonika Street,; Private Andy Kinnaird, of the 18th (Auckland) Battalion, First Echelon, in Egypt, tells of a picnic enjoyed on the banks of the Nile. "We travelled about thirty miles 'down the Nile to a place known as The Barrage, which boasts a v<sry nice park, complete with beautiful green lawns and tropical trees .... We had a roll on the grass and a ' sleep under the trees and that formed a delightful change from the continual sand and dust.'* After describing a dessert of water melons and lemonade, Private Kinnaird tells of the operations of the locks in the river ; and: the feluccas, or sailing barges„ used by the Egyptians. Private Kinnaird says he had quite a thrill wlien he saw the Pyramids for the first time and realised that they had been built about five thousand years ago. Together with several companions, he attempted the ascent of the tallest, but with the heat registering 106 in the shade, accomplishment: gave way to comfort when half-way up the mountain of stone.
