DEARER MEAT
Id PER LB. INCREASE NEW PRICE YESTERDAY The price of meat advanced by one penny per pound yesterday, although, as pointed out by the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, this increase is permissive, not obligatory. Bacon and other small goods are excluded from the order. In a statement in Wellington on Monday the Minister said that in accordance with previous statements made by him it had become necessary to make a further adjustment. In his earlier announcements the Minister pointed out the inadvisability of introducing a complicated method of supervision of auction prices or the institution of any system which might debar the farmer from being adequately conv pensated for the extra cost of cattle fattened during the winter for spring sale. In order to protect both the pubile and the producer it had been decided that the whole situation would best be dealt with by the regulation of retail prices.
