OHOPE SWIMMING POOL

Sir, —Re "Mother's" letter of 29th; The remark about Ohope's determination to have a swimming bath being the silliest thing yet proposed is too silly to take seriously % It has taken Whakatane sixtyyears to think of putting its should ers to the wheel in regard to swimming baths and I venture to say that another sixty years would have passed before their shoulders would have been made use of if an energetic and public-spirited matij who has the welfare of the Ohope children at heart, had not started the ball rolling. This gentleman has given practically the his time for the last three months in the interests of Ohope, and no\y„ certain people over the hill \vk<> never have had, and never would have had, the initiative to start the scheme for Whakatane, want to grab the money collected by one man's efforts for their children and Iteave Ohope out of it. "Mother" wants to know whoi would use the swimming bath when the ocean is at hand. The idea of the bath is to teach the resident children to swim and mothers need not be so anxious when their chiltdren bathe m the ocean. "Pool sports interest." Yes, that is a good : idea when the pooling is pretty much one-sided. The Whakatane Athletic Club put on a really good programme a few months ago and the locals who attended could almost be counted on the lingers of both hands* and IT yenture to say that in 12 months* time there would be just as much! interest shown in a Whakatane swimming bath. The attitude of members of the. ' County Council is beyond my comprehension . Ohope is a great asset but quite a few people do not seem to realise it. There is not a finer beach in New Zealand and looking at the matter from a commercial point of view it will bring much money to Whakatane in the very near future. Yours etc.,
