BREEDING OF AMIABLE Owing to scratehings and the indisposition ol' P. Atkins there were some almost last-minute changes in riders at Ellerslie on Saturday. The winning mount 011 Black Thread in the Easter Handicap was secured by 1 the successful apprentice W. J. Mud ford only after a decision had been made not! to run Sunola* for whom he was engaged. Sunola was withdrawn at 10.40 in the morning. Another rider had also to be secured for Katlibella when Atkins was feeling unwell after riding Charing Cross in the Great Northern Oaks, and H. Goldfinch was given the mount. The condition of Atkins was due to a fall from Katlibella at Avon dale on Friday morning. • » «p » The two year old filly Wiild Fox, by Foxbridge from Wild Hind, the dam of Wild Chase, has been sent; to Stonyli.urst, where she will be spoiled until next season. She showed 110 form when raced in the spring, but when she returns to the stable of 11, and A. Gutts she will be given another trial. • m * m A striking instance of the difference between relations on the race track was afforded at Carterton, when Manalian, a three year old filly, started the outsider of 12 runners in the Maiden Plate and finished near the rear of the field. An hour or so later her half-sister Amiable ran a record mile and beat High Caste and Ajax at Flemington. Manahau is by Intruder. • * « « Agreeable, the dam of the new mile record-holder, Amiable, was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry, but all her early progeny. including. Amiable, were bred by Mr W. R. Keraball. Later she was owned by Mr E. J. Ussher, but, according to Hastings reports, she is now in the Flaxmere Stud. Tn addition to her great mile, Amiable earlier in the week equalled the course record for seven furlongs, 1.23%. * * m m The three year old Pern, who showed stamina in winning the Jubilee Hack Cup on the first day of the Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting, is to be gelded and will not be raced again this season. Although he was unplaced in his 1(5 previous starts, Pern, who cost his owner, Mr W. H. Gainsford, 650 guineas as a yearling at the Sydney sales, has always been held in high regard by his connections, especially on account of his good breeding. Pern is by the Spion Ivop horse The Buzzard, sire of The Buzzer,, Marauder, Conandale, Six Fifty and Early Bird, from Culfort,, who is a halfsister. by High Force, to Lough Neagh. Culfort is from the Boniform mare Culture, who was also the dam of Eastern Belle y dam of the Auckland Cup winner The Buz.zer, to whom Pern is thus very closely related. • « 9 * The two year old Royal Descent will not race again this season and will be returned to his owner, M>* A. J. McGovtrn, at Te Awamutu. where he will be treated to a spell. A son of Beau Pere and The Begum, dam of Mazir, Stretto, Arvakur and High Caste, Royal Descent, who won the Mid-isunimer Handicap at Ellerslie at Christmas, is a fine, upstanding colt and a good galloper, but unfortunately he is affected in the wind. His full-brotlicr Arvakur : was similarly affected, but was successfully operated on by Dr W. C. Ring and intentions are that the same course will be taken with Royal Descent when the trouble becomes more advanced.
