MEN WHO ENLIST
COUNTY TO GIVE WEEK'S PAY
ONE COUNCILLOR OBJECTS
A. recommendation that when county employees were called up 3or war service their positions should be held open for them, but that no further action should be taken, was before the Whakatanc County Council on Tuesday when it considered thci Finance Committee's report.
Cr T. G. H. Cawte said many firms were granting pay to employees on active service. The council could not do this but it might be possible to give a week or a fortnight's holiday pay to men called up There were often expenses to be met Cr J. L. Burnett agreed that the young men were doing a great thing for the country but it was difficult to see how a corporate body could pay wages to men in camp. It was moved that two week's pay be given to men enlisting. This went a long way said Cr 11. C. McCready. Many farm employees would get nothing when they enlisted. It should also be remembered that the. men employed by the council were in a good position. They should remember the need iflor equality of sacrifice. The motion was amended to provide for one week's pay. Cr A. F. McGougan agreed that the men must be encouraged to enlist. Equality of sacrifice was not altogether practicable. He did not think the ratepayers would object to a grant to the employees.
The motion to give one week's pay on the calling up of employees was carried, Cr McCready voting against it and asking for his vote to be recorded.
