MINOR UNIONS TRIAL
Sir, —I should have thought that in the last issue of your excellent little paper there would have been some comment about the extraordinary nominations from the Bay. of Plenty Union for the Minor Unions Trial game in Ghristchurch, and' I also thought that the Auckland papers would comment on the nominations from other uuions but no one •9 seems to have picked the flaw, so I suppose I must trespass on your space to the extent of a few inches. The minor unions game is, I in some sense a trial for the All Black team to tour South Africa. We all know of the foolish colour line the South Africans draw, but while we deplore it we can only bow to their wishes and send a team which will be well-ireceived there. So why nominate Maori players for the trials since they haven't got a chance in a million to get in, and if they are giv, ,en a game in the trials they only keep worthy European players from showing their paces. It is deplorable to have to write and Ido ndt want it to be thought for one moment that there is anything personal in my remarks, nor am I barracking for any particular player, who did not get in the nominations. On playing ability alone any of the men chosen deserve their nominations! and as gentlemen they would undoubtedly be fitted to tour as representatives of New Zealand. They certainly would not go haywire as the first Springboks are supposed to have done in liotorua and other places. Still, they are barred from the team so why send them to Ghristchurch? Yours etc., * TANEATUA. v
