MAIN HIGHWAY
Sir, —"Settler"' is evidently a backblock r&ncher. His great need is an ideal road to his far back holding. The County Council will give him that. Ift is not proposed to take the Main Highway through the business anea of Whakatane. Tlie Public Works Department some time ago surveyed a, route at* the rear of the Strand shops. We do nc<t expect much in money from the tilavellers but their good word for our town would benefit as much. By the route Stewant Street Goulstone Road and Manaetotara Gorge Whakatane would look to travellers just ai mere village'. Anyhow ''Settler" what do you know about what suits a town —better keep to your own affairs of the back-block At the meeting the townsman of Whakatane were unanimous that the road be made through the town as surveyed.
Yours etc., "TOWNSMAN."
Sir, —I note that "Settler*' writes that towns do not benefit materially by the main highway running through the business, portion of them. He means, of from Hie travelling public. Tills Slight be so.
However anywhere through the Enrough of Whakatane will do the set-' tiers of Wainui provided the higlu way comes our way. It is time wehad a decent road, and the sooner it is made, the sooner will the town of Whakatane get some benefit and thanks from WAINUI SETTLER.
