INSTITUTE MEETING

(Beacon Correspondent) The monthly meeting of the Waimana_Nukuhou AVomcn's Institute was held last Thursday, there was a very good attendance of members, and Mr,s Marra presided. Following the Institute song, the president welcomed members of the Whakatane Institute, who provided the entertainment for the afternoon. The usual business was dealt with and a most interesting letter was read from Mrs N. CClaryk y who has taken the W.I. trip to England. Duiing the meeting three members were presented with gifts from their fellow members with best wishes for their future. They were Mrs Mclvor and Mrs Bishop Ward law, who are to reside in Auckland, and Miss M. Fleming, who is to be married shortly. Mrs Mclvor and Miss Fleming thanked all for the gifts which were much appreciated, and Miss E. Ward responded on behalf, ofrMrs Wardlaw . Mrs" Armstrong of Whakatane then occupied the chair with Mrs Norman as secretary. The roll call was "Children's funny Sayings, ■' .which was Avell responded to. Items were sweetly rendered by the Glee Club and vocal solos by "Mrs Berry were much appreciated. Mrs SutclifTe spoke on Fiji and the handicaps of the Fijians. The speaker had a wonderful display of articles from the islands the talk being most interesting. Several competitions were held, and Mrs Stewart most capably demonstrated metal work which was keen. !y watched by members. The day's competitions were: Best ■Flower, Mrs Jerram 1 (Camelia). Mrs Mitchell 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. 11 entries. Jar of Marmalade, Mrs C. Wylde 1, Miss E. Wardlaw 2, Mrs F. Bell 3. 7 entries. Eggless Fruit CaJte, Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Stevenson 2, Mrs Burnett 3. 4 entries. A delicious te a was served by the hostesses and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Whakatane members for the splendid programme provided Tlie singing of the National Anthem closed a most interesting afternoon. PERSONAL Mr and.Mrs F. Carman, and Mr R. McDonald, Broadwood North Auckland, are touring the North Island by car, and were the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Eagle, while visiting the Bay of. Plenty.
