We wasted a considerable mount of time, but eventually goi: the Maoris to agree to the borough widening the road by six feet, upoft the express understanding that we will not ask for another six ' feet. - again. This will give us a 20ft carriage way, said the Mayor; Mr B. *7. Barry ? at Monday night's meeting of the Whakatajie Borough Council. ''Mr Henderson will use the spoil from the side of the road for the Centennial Park,'' added Mr Barry. "We. miist not touch, on the cave of Muriwa.i or cut through the foot of the cliH. They had been instructed by Sir A. Ngata that no one was touch it. We wanted to cut off the toe, but they said that we not to. They say the cave runs in much further than w.e think. * In reply to a question Mr Barry that the Maoris claimed there 1 had been some undertak'ng by the county council at the time the road was formed that no more land would be taken.
