CANADIANS HOLD BANQUET SUCCESSFUL DANCE FOLLOWS To commemorate Canada's Dominion Day which fell on Saturday, Julv 1, Canadian residents of Whakatane mostly* Whakatane Paper Mills employees, gathered at the Commercial' Hotel v Whakkthne, to hold a most" successful banquet. . As was showp -on the outside of the specially .print. • eff mfeViu It was a real union of .the Maple Leaf' and the Fern, for there were a number of New Zealanders present, and fhe friendship of the •sister Dominions was stressed by speakers. Special thanks were given to Mr H_ E. Cucksey. ajid to his staff, for the Success of the gathering. The first toast was that of the King and it was followed by the National Anthem. Secondly came the toast to New Zealand, responded to by. Mr AI Brown, who toasted Canada in re^ly The guests were next honoured,, and then came the toast to the Ladies, which Mr C. W. Hills, the chairman -and toastmaster, responded to. '<0 Canada, 7 ' and "The Maple Leaf" "the two Canadian national were sung during the evening, and r Mr A. Frastad, mill superintendent, ■spoke. Another interesting specch was that of Mr A. C. Ranby. of "Edgecumbe, one of the guests. win, gave an account of his 25 years resilience in Canada. The guests included Mr- and Mrs S. C. Reid, Mr and Mrs .O* C. Mowry, Mr and Mrs C. W.-Hills,* Mr and Mrs A. C. Ranby. Misses G. Ranby, J. Ranby. Messrs C. F. Christie A. Brown. R. Tinkler. A. Larson, O. Paul, A. Joliffe, E. Joliffe. M. Barrowman, D. Hills, N. Hills, G. Hay. .den # J. Doust, A. Ivivi. H. Piekle.s M. Mollich, J. Ranby, Frastad, Moen Rhvberg, Cairns. It was regretted H. Horroeks, managing di, the Whakatane Paper Mills Ltd was unable to attend the dinrxvr and the subsequent dance. This second function, held in the Mill Recreation Hall, was also exceptionally pleasant. Freddy Burt's band was in attendance, and during the interval a reccnt arrival frtom Canada, Mr -Mike Mollick, brilliantly played several saxophone solos. Great credit for the organisation •of the dinner and dance is due to Messrs C. JefTery r J. Doust, A. KLvi / .. and Glen Hayden who spared no pf. fort which would lead to their fpl-low-guests' pleasure or convenience.
