IN NINE DAYS
O [ : I: ■ ■ PAPER MILLS' PLANS; li-" RESUMPTION OF PRODUCTION t After the temporary cessation of • operations at the Whaltatane Paper Mills it is now expected that produc. tion will begin, again in nine days, midnight onSSundayy y July 16 being the time fixed for its ; resumption. The stoppage'AVas due to delay in ar. rival of a new felt for the boardmaking machine, and also to the necessity to erect a hood over the drying plant. This job is now nearing completion, and the fans and motors <u*e ex_ pected to arrive in a day or two. The erection of the hood was necessaiy to carry away the steam which was condensing owing to the lower AvinW ) -temperatures, and making it impossible to dry some of the heavier / grades of board. The barking drum is now in working order again, and its rumble, which can be heard from Whakatane at times, will signal the pleasing fact of resumption of operation?.. This huge drum, into which the cut down logs are conveyed, does an exceptionally efficient job, and peels the bark off better than a workman can by hand, not only with straight, clean timber but also with twisted and knotty lengths. Thus ? the finished board, which -is at present freer from the dark specks of bark than- the average imported article, will soon :9}e still further improved.
