HOARDING ON HILL

LICENSE FOR ERECTION GIVEN

At the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council an application was received from Mr H. E. Cucksey, Whakatane. lor permission to erect a neon sign on the cliff face above Com meree Street, and a motion to that effect was introduced, but -the council discovered after the matter had been discussed that it was not necessary to deal with the matter by re. solution. The j\layor t Mr B. S. Barry, said the harbour board had given permission for the erection of the sign on their property. He had looked through the by-laws and had foui".i that they coultl not prevent the election of hoardings though they could make certain stipulations on public safety, or ihc objectionable nature of a hoarding. He would rather not see hoardings •'ii the hill, but tha,t was his personam opinion, and the borough could i:o l refuse a license provided that it was satisfied with the way the hoarding was erected. He did not like the idea of boardings on the hill. T'nv had /dready got two there, and he thought '.hem unsightly. He introduced a motion giving per. mission to Mr Cucksey to erect the hoarding, but withdrew it when it AVrs pointed out- that a resolution was; unnecessary.
