- A LABOUR OF LOVE The honorary work of Captain L. V. Sanderson, President of the For. fst and Bird Protection Society, lev the saving of native forests and birds was warmly commended at the recent annual meeting of the Society. It was mentioned that New Zealand was greatly indebted to him for-'his very valuable activities year after vear. The meeting decided to place on record its great appreciation, of his very important national work. In reply, Captain Sanderson replied that when he retired from business some years ago, he felt that he would hot like to eat the bread of idleness. lie was able to pay for the community's goods and services which lie needed for his living, but he believed that he should do something to justify his existence; therefore he took up the necessary work of saving the native birds and forests which were threatened with cxtinc, tion. He thought that he had ample reward in seeing to-dav the strong growth of public opinion in favour of that necessary conservation. He paid special tribute to Mr. James Cowan, one of the most helpful work ers for the society's ideals. Mr Cowan had effectively used hi s pen for many years on behalf of native forests and birds.
