K" ° A WORLD PROBLEM Major J. R. Kirk remarked at the recent annual meeting of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, that aii over the world nature was severely .punishing man for his mistakes iu indiscriminate destruction of protective forests. In many countries now, very energetic and far-reaching efforts had to be made in schemes to -save the soil upon which the welfare . of humanity was absolutely dependent. He was pleased to see that the Government was setting up a com. mission to inquire thoroughly into the erosion trouble in New Zealand, .ami to make recommendations for of the mistakes of the past. A resolution was adopted congratulating the Government on its iVcis. ion. and offering the utmoit assistf of the society for the achieve. nicnt of the ideal of soil saving. It was very f pleasing and very encouraging to see "their real understanding of the prob. lems of erosion, and their willing-
ness to help in remedial action. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Press for its assistance in this national work.
