Gold And Green Ball In Tauranga

Country Candidate Crowned Queen

Spanish Dances Presented

The feature of the Green and Gold Ball, held in Tauranga on Thursday night, was the crowning of the Mutual Improvement Association queen, Spanish style. A novel method was instituted in choosing her, the seven candidates, Misses N. Chase (Taupo), G. Albert (Maketu), S. Ormsby (town), C. Faulkner (Judea), A. Leaf (country), J. Davies (Wairoa) and A. Stewart (Cambridge . Road), taking from a box envelopes, one of which indicated the queen. This was Miss Leaf (country) who was crowned by the Mayor of Tauranga, Mr L. R. Wilkinson. All the candidates paraded up the hall on to the stage, led by two small girls, Elaine and Evelyn Kohu, as flowergirl and crown-bearer, respectively. The Mayor read the proclamation and, with suitable ceremony, crowned Miss Leaf as queen of the M.1.A., 1949. The other candidates curtseyed to the queen who, escorted by the Mayor, then went off the stage, through a guard of honour. They waltzed back through the lines, the guard of honour following after them. The princesses then came off the stage and joined in the waltz. During the crowning ceremony, the dance, Senorita Mia, was presented by six couples, a Mexican dance by four couples, and a rhumba by Mr R. Tawa and Miss R. Tawa. An exhibition Centennial Waltz was presented by 12 couples. A spot waltz was won by Miss J. Humphreys and Mr J. Steward. Opportunity was taken to make presentations to Miss Gracie Albert who won the championship for the district queen at a ball at Maketu; and to Judea, winners cf the New Zealand Mutual Improvement Association tennis shield. The town hall had been artistically decorated in preen and gold flora, greenery and balloons.
